Jen's April 2016 Book Haul

Like Mel, I have also done something different with my haul photos for this month. I loved how her photos looked so much that it inspired me to do something similar and I quite like the results!

I acquired quite a haul of books in April. Most of these were due to the fact that I suddenly kept spotting super cheap prices of books on my Book Depository wishlist. I also have one of my local department stores to thank for a few as well. Big W is the absolute worst for impulse buying! It's constantly making me break my rule of not buying books in a series before that series is complete! The temptation of having reasonably priced books that I can take home with me straight away is something that I just can't resist because the worst thing about buying books online is having to wait for them to arrive in the mail.

Kindred Spirits by Rainbow Rowell
This is a short story that was specially written for World Book Day. I know nothing else about it, but Rainbow Rowell is one of my autobuy authors so of course I had to get myself a copy.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This book is constantly praised and talked about and I've never read it. I've never owned a copy because I always wanted it in hardcover, but I saw this paperback copy sitting on the shelf and before I knew it, I'd purchased it.

Firstlife by Gena Showalter
This hasn't gotten the greatest reviews, but the story did interest me so when I saw it sitting on the shelf I decided to go ahead and buy it. And the cover is beautiful!

The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
I read Soundless by Richelle Mead a few months ago and absolutely loved it so of course I wanted to read more books by her. Her Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series are loved and talked about by so many people, but I was never really all that into vampires and I think I've moved past reading those books now. However this is the first book in a fantasy series which sounds more like my kind of thing.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
I hauled a signed special edition hardcover copy of this book only last month, but I absolutely love this cover and when I saw it on the shelves I just had to grab it.

The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan
This is a series that I have had on my wishlist for months and months but I could never bring myself to buy it before because these beautiful hardcovers are so expensive! I was lucky enough to spot it super cheap one day so I snapped it up and I can't wait to dive into this series!

The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan
It was a similar situation with these books as well. But I'm so happy to finally have them and I look forward to starting this series once I finish the Heroes of Olympus.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik
This one was surprisingly difficult to get my hands on because I wanted this particular edition and Book Depository was constantly be out of stock. I was lucky one day and managed to get myself a copy right before it sold out again! The book is beautiful and I've heard so many good things about it!

Lady Renegades by Rachel Hawkins
This is the third and final book in the Rebel Belle trilogy that I have wanted to read since the first book came out two years ago. I have waited and waited for all the books to come out and now I can marathon them!

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
This is the final book in the Raven Cycle Quartet by Maggie Stiefvater. Again, I wanted to own all the books in the series before I started reading it.

The Orphan Queen & The Mirror King by Jodi Meadows
This is a YA high fantasy duology involving magic which is everything that I love and I can't wait to get to these ones! And those covers are gorgeous! And so reflective!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
This is the first book in the Newsoul trilogy that I have had on my radar for a while now. I knew that I wanted these hardcover editions and unfortunately Incarnate is out of print in this edition so I had to get a rather expensive copy from eBay. It was worth it though!

Red Rising & Golden Son by Pierce Brown
These are the first two books in a dystopian trilogy that I have heard great things about. They are normally so expensive so when I spotted them cheap one day I bought them and now I'm on the hunt for the third book.

Gathering Darkness & Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes
Books three and four in the Falling Kingdoms series. I read the first two books in this series in 2015 and absolutely loved them. But the books were so expensive and now, six months later, my library still hasn't managed to get a copy of Gathering Darkness (major fail on their part) so I just never continued on with the series. But as with most of the books in this haul, I miraculously saw them cheap one day and pounced on them.
A Book of Spirits and Thieves by Morgan Rhodes
This is the first book in a spin-off prequel series to Falling Kingdoms and it was also cheap so I grabbed it as well.

The Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson
This is an author who is constantly raved about and his Mistborn series is one in particular that I've wanted to read. But I've always been a little intimidated by how big his books are and also put off by the fact that he has so many series that are currently incompleted. But I decided to just go for it and start myself off with the first three of the seven books in the Mistborn series. Bonus, this box set is just gorgeous!

Outlander & Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
So apparently I've turned into one of those people who must have multiple editions of the same book because of the covers. I have been obsessed with all things Outlander lately since I started reading the second book and the second season of the TV show started airing. But just look at these beautiful covers! Especially the Dragonfly in Amber cover. How could I not add these to my collection?

Mel's April 2016 Book Haul

I'm trying something new with my haul photos. I'm loving them so far! I might just stick to doing them this way for a while!

Special by Georgia Blain - I picked this one up after seeing it in the store and reading the description. I've already read and reviewed this one, so if you'd like to check that out, you can find it on Goodreads.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes - I watched the trailer for the movie and oh my god I want to see it! But I definitely want to read the book first, so when the store restocked it, I grabbed it before it sold out again.

Dreaming of Zhou Gong by Traci Harding - One of my favourite books ever was written by Traci and I've been wanting this for a while, especially since it has a Chinese theme going on. Also, I bought it for $10 from a sales rack!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir - Okay, okay, I bought the other edition a few months ago. As much as I love both covers, this edition is a lot more reader friendly, according to my standard. This edition is smaller than the other one, so if I were to travel with it, it'll take up less space in my bag. I gave the larger edition to mum to read because the print is much bigger and that's what she prefers (plus, she's already started reading The Hunger Games trilogy and the Divergent series, so she might like this one too).

Head Over Heels by Holly Smale - the latest book in the Geek Girl series. I love how light and fluffy these books are, plus they're full of obscure facts and pop culture references!

Flawed by Cecelia Ahern - I read Where Rainbows End/Love, Rosie last year and while I liked the story, it did end a bit abruptly. But I like Cecelia's writing style and her ability to draw me into the story, so when I found out she was releasing a YA novel, I knew I had to have it!

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray - I've never read any of Claudia Gray's books, but I love the covers for this series, and the story sounds interesting, so I picked it up when I saw it for a decent price.

Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray - As with the first book, I saw this going at a decent price, so I picked it up.

Half Lost by Sally Green - I already have the first two books in the series, so when I saw this, I grabbed it.

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift - I got this book for free! Kelloggs had a promotion going, so I checked the selection and decided a classic would be a good choice (everything else was middle grade or younger). The book wasn't packaged well, and so arrived with a crease in the cover, but who can complain when I got it for free!

The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling - I've been looking for this cover for a while. Each time I came across it in the past, it was either damaged or too expensive (here's looking at you, Valley Books), so when I found it at a decent price and in perfect condition at Big W, I had to have it!

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer - I read Cinder not that long ago and loved it, so I want to continue the series! I decided to order this and Cress through one of the bookstores that I like to shop at instead of ordering it online (I don't want any bookstores near me closing because they're not being utilised), but when Cress came in, it was damaged. So they're ordering Cress again and I have this one to keep me busy in the meantime.

Dream House by Marzia Bisognin - I picked this up, read the back and liked the sound of it. Then I realised who it was written by, because I have watched Marzia on YouTube! Bonus.

Doctor Who Travels in Time Colouring Book - Because Doctor Who and colouring!

The Gunslinger by Stephen King - This is another to add to my Stephen King collection, but the bonus was that I got it for $0.50 at a local op shop! Aside from that, I've heard that this is an excellent book (1st in the Dark Tower series, which is highly praised).

Grumpy Cat: No-It-All - Because Grumpy Cat!

The Siren by Kiera Cass - I've already heard some good things about this book, so I finally picked it up.

That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau - The reason I bought this book is because last year I tried a no sugar diet to see if it was effective, after doing some research on the internet. Even without exercise, I have lost 8+kgs (works out to be only 1kg a month, but that's better than gaining!). Most of the information in this book backs up the information I found online, so considering that the diet this book talks about is proven to work for me, it's a great reference for me if I need reminding of any of it.

That Sugar Guide by Damon and Zoe Gameau - This is a companion book for the previous one, but has more recipes and goes into more depth about the different types and amounts of sugar that go into food, and especially focuses on the amount of sugar that is in supposedly "healthy" foods, like cereal, yoghurt and juices.

Both of these books are quite cheap, ranging at about $20-$22, depending where you buy it (as opposed to other nutritional/cookbooks out there). I bought one from Big W and the other from Kmart (I haven't looked for them elsewhere, but Target may also have them for around the same price), but considering the information in these books can help improve your health (especially stop diabetes), it's worth the money.

A Stolen Life: a Memoir by Jaycee Dugard (photo from Goodreads, I forgot to photograph it!) - I have no idea why stores in Australia have stocked this all of a sudden, but I don't recall seeing it before now. This is a powerful story of Jaycee's experience with sexual imprisonment. I remember when the story broke over the news, and I've wanted to read this since I heard about it.

PHEW! 20 books!

May 2016 TBR

Jen
With one or two exceptions, I'm sensing a theme for this month! It seems like May is going to be another month of fantasy, but it’s what I’m currently in the mood for, so I’m just going with it!

Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander #2) by Diana Gabaldon
I started this book in April and actually managed to get just over halfway through. Considering how big this book is, I thought that was a great accomplishment and I’ll be aiming to finish it in May.

In A Handful Of Dust by Mindy McGinnis
I read Not a Drop to Drink in April but I didn’t continue on and read the sequel because I had so many other books that I wanted to read. However I do want to read the conclusion to this duology while the events of the first book are still relatively fresh in my mind so I will be reading this book in May.

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare
This was on my April TBR and after finishing the Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy novellas, I was super excited to read this one, but I just didn’t get to it.

The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
I did manage to at least start this one in April but I didn’t make it very far so I’m hoping to make more progress during May.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (#4) by J.K. Rowling
I continued on with my Harry Potter re-read for 2016 and read Prisoner of Azkaban last month. From that point on the books just get so much better so I’m excited to continue on with this book this month!

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas
I finally read Throne of Glass in April and I absolutely loved it so of course I want to continue on with the series!

Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms #3) by Morgan Rhodes
I read the first two books in this series over six months ago and loved them but I never continued past that point because my library STILL hasn’t managed to get a copy of this book. I’ve been really wanting to continue on with this series for a while now so I finally decided to just purchase the hardcovers myself.

The Lost Hero (Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus #1) by Rick Riordan
Yet another series that I wanted to read for a long time but I never got around to it. I completed my re-read of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series last month so now I can continue on with this series!

Mel
I really want to finish some of the books on my currently reading list, so hopefully I'll get a few of these books out of the way.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling
That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau
That Sugar Guide by Damon and Zoe Gameau
The Siren by Kiera Cass
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

If I have the time, I also want to get a start on these:

Dream House by Marzia Bisognin
The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

April 2016 Wrap Up

Jen
I don’t think I did too badly with my reading this month. I didn’t get to all the books that I put on my TBR, but I just went with what I felt like reading and ended up reading some fantastic books! However, quite a significant proportion of the books I read were audiobooks and also re-reads. So I would really like to make an effort to read more of my physical unread books as I’m still struggling to get my physical TBR pile down to a somewhat less frightening amount.

The Martian by Andy Weir (audiobook) → 5/5
Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson & Robin Wasserman → 4/5
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (audiobook) → 4.5/5

Percy Jackson and the The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (audiobook) → 5/5
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan (audiobook) → 5/5
Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan (audiobook) → 4/5
Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan (audiobook) → 4.5/5
Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian by Rick Riordan (audiobook) → 5/5
The Demigod Files by Rick Riordan → 3/5

King’s Rising by C.S. Pacat → 4.5/5

Mel
I haven't read much this month, but I've been bouncing between several books and reading a little of each, rather than just sticking to the one. I call this a semi-slump, where I feel like reading, but just can't stick to one book for an extended period of time.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Illustrated Edition by JK Rowling  5/5
Special by Georgia Blain  3.75/5
