Jen's 2016 Reading Goals

This is a list of all the reading goals that I have set for myself in 2016! They haven’t changed too much from my 2015 goals but I have tweaked a few so that they are more realistic and will hopefully be achievable. I have also added in a couple of new goals this year in an attempt to broaden my reading experience and maybe even discover a favourite new book or two.  Depending on how my goals are progressing, I may do updates every few months or just whenever I feel the need to.

1. Goodreads 2016 reading challenge: 100 books
2015 was quite an amazing year of reading for me and I doubt that I will be able to keep up the amount of reading that I was able to do in 2015 nor do I want to put that pressure on myself, so 100 books seems like a good number to aim for in 2016. As the year goes on I may choose to increase or decrease this number depending on how my reading is progressing.

2. Read at least 50 books over 200 pages in length
I created this one separate to my Goodreads challenge because only new books that I read will count. Any re-reads will be excluded, as well as audiobooks, graphic novels, and so on.

3. Complete 10 series in 2016
I set this as a goal for myself in 2015 and managed to exceed the number I set. I want to be more relaxed with my reading this year so 10 seems like a good number to aim for. The rules I have set for myself with this goal are: only new series will count (re-reads of series will not), duologies will not be counted (only trilogies or longer series will qualify) and graphic novel series will not be included.

4. Read 3 books and watch the movie adaptations
There are quite a few movies that I really want to watch but I refuse to do so because I haven’t read the book yet. Having this as one of my goals will hopefully be more incentive for me to read the book (and to finally be able to watch the movie)!

5. Read at least 3 classics
I had a goal to read at least one classic in 2015 and I definitely achieved that.  However, the ones I read in 2015 were all children’s classics. While I am not making it a necessary part of this goal, in 2016 I definitely want to try and tackle some of the many adult classics that I have been accumulating on my shelves for the past year. I have increased the number to 3 for 2016 so that the number is not too overwhelming.

6. Read a genre I don’t usually read
For me this is historical fiction. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book from this genre before and I own very few books in this genre. I should clarify that I have a strict definition of what I would classify as historical fiction. If a book reads as historical fiction but also has fantasy or paranormal elements then I tend to place it within the fantasy genre rather than historical fiction. It might be weird but it’s just how my mind works.

7. Read 5 new to me authors
The main aim of this goal is to expand my reading even further. It will allow me to read some books from debut authors in 2016 or inspire me to pick up some of the many books on my TBR by authors I have never read before.

8. Read 5 books over 500 pages
So many of the books on my physical TBR are big books and for some reason I keep pushing the longer books towards the bottom of my TBR pile even though they are books that I really want to read. It has to stop and hopefully this goal will help me at least make a start in getting some of those big books read!
Any re-reads will not count for this goal! Although I don’t imagine I will be re-reading too many books that are over 500 pages anyway (Harry Potter would be the most likely possibility).

9. Decrease my TBR pile
I failed miserably at this goal last year and actually abandoned this partway through the year because my book buying had become so out of control. I began 2015 with under 100 TBR books and I actually ended the year with 213 physical TBR books. I couldn’t believe that I had managed to more than double my TBR books and that’s without counting the odd eBook purchase here and there!!
I have decided that for 2016, I will definitely be working on minimising my number of unread books. I would love to decrease my physical TBR by at least 50 books but I have decided that I will not be setting a number limit to reach so that I’m not putting so much pressure on myself. The focus will just be on reading as much as I can. I will definitely still be buying books throughout the year (though hopefully it will be a lot more controlled) so hopefully I can actually achieve this goal. Only time will tell though!

10. Read Mel’s 2016 TBR picks
In 2015 Mel and I decided that it would be fun if she picked 5 books from my TBR for me to read and I picked 5 of her TBR books for her to read. This worked out really well and it actually pushed me to read a series or two that would most likely still be sitting unread on my shelves if she hadn’t chosen them for me. We had so much fun that we decided to do the same thing in 2016 and Mel has picked out some great books off my TBR that I’m super excited to read!
- The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly
- Heidi by Johanna Spyri
- Burn for Burn trilogy by Jenny Han
- Dark Heart trilogy by Lee Monroe
- Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi
