Goodreads Description: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.
Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.
Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden.
And that would kind of suck.
Half-Blood is the first book in the Covenant series and I feel like this series doesn’t get nearly as much attention as Jennifer’s other paranormal series (I actually own her Lux series and The Dark Elements series but have not read either one yet). I have seen and heard many people say that this series is very similar to the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. However I have not read that series so I can’t comment on that.
Though what I can say is that I really enjoyed this book! I love Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing but I’ve only read a few of her contemporary books. Paranormal fantasy is not a genre that I reach for too often and I really have to be in the mood for it. So this was the first of her paranormal works that I tried and it definitely didn't disappoint!
Firstly, the concept of a paranormal series revolving around a race that descended from the Greek gods rather than the more typical angels, vampires or werewolves really appealed to me. I really enjoyed reading about this world, although I did think that the world building was lacking a little bit.
I found the storyline to be unique and very intriguing. I read it so quickly and I always had to know what was going to happen next. Also, all the plot twists! Some were obvious and I could see them coming, but others caught me completely by surprise!
While I didn't immediately love the characters, they certainly grew on me, particularly Aiden! He’s yet another perfect book boyfriend that I can add to my growing list!
I thought that Alex was a strong and courageous protagonist although she did have some qualities that always irritate me. She definitely had an attitude problem and just didn’t know when to shut her mouth. She also had a tendency to be reckless and just dive straight into dangerous situations without a second thought for her safety, or the safety of those who would inevitably have to come to her aid. Despite that, I did like Alex and I’m hoping for some great character growth throughout the series.
I’m not too fond of Seth though. I found him to be really annoying and he just constantly rubbed me the wrong way. He did have his decent moments (though those were few and far between). But what I really didn't like was the potential for a love triangle between Alex, Aiden and Seth. I can picture it happening, but I hope I’m wrong.
Overall this was a great first book in this series. It was a fast paced read and so much has happened already! I gave it a 4.5/5 rating and I can’t wait to continue on and see where the series goes from here!
