TomeTopple Readathon Round 4 Wrap Up

Jen
I’m so happy with how I went in this readathon! I didn’t complete all the challenges or get to all the books that I wanted to. However I did manage to complete a few tomes and more importantly, finish a trilogy! Those were my main goals going in, so I declare this readathon a success!

The challenges:
1. Read more than 1 tome - completed
Super happy I actually achieved this, considering the size of some of the books I read!

2. Read a graphic novel (still over 500 pages!) - completed
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

3. Read a tome that is part of a series - completed
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare

A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOTAR #3) by Sarah J. Maas

4. Buddy read a tome - did not complete
This was the challenge that I decided to skip.

5. Read an adult novel - did not complete
I had Voyager by Diana Gabaldon planned for this challenge but I didn’t end up getting to it. But I love the TV tie-in editions so I couldn’t resist including the cover here!

Mel
I barely read a thing during this readathon, so it was a significant fail for me, but I'll at least outline briefly where I got to in each book.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling- Page 202
A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin - Page 55

I still plan on reading these books for the rest of the month (in fact, I plan on reading A Game of Thrones for as long as it takes me to finish it, even if it takes me a year!) in which I hope to at least finish Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by the end of August.

Jen's 2017 Reading Goals - Mid Year Progress

This is happening later than I originally intended, so it’s definitely past the mid year point, but I still wanted to check in with the reading goals that I set myself at the start of the year. I love tracking my progress and seeing if I’ve been able to stick with the goals or if my priorities have changed and subsequently if my goals need to be adjusted.

I didn’t set too many goals for myself and I deliberately tried to keep them vague so that I wouldn’t feel restricted with my reading and I have to say that it’s worked out great so far! I love having the freedom of being able to read what I want. But that’s now turned into what I feel is a different problem in that I now have too many series that I’ve started and have been slow to continue on with because there are so many other books that I want to read.

Goodreads Reading Challenge: 100 books → in progress
As of 1st August I have read 97 of 100 books so I am definitely well ahead there. I have actually decided to increase my challenge to 125 books, because why not?

Decrease my TBR pile → on track
According to my TBR Tracker spreadsheet that I created, I have purchased 36 new books this year and I have read 48 of my unread books. That means I have decreased my TBR pile by 12 books!! That’s not a huge number, but it’s a step in the right direction and it’s infinitely better than increasing my TBR pile! It’s such a struggle to not buy books and actually read the ones that I own.

Read/complete 10 series → completed
As of mid-way through August I have completed 10 series! Which is actually surprising because I thought I had finished less than that. My problem is that I seem to start so many series and then take forever to complete that series because I’m always reading too many other books.
While it’s satisfying to have completed this challenge, my feelings about this goal have definitely changed since the beginning of the year. I no longer care about the number of series I complete, I just want to finish all the ones I’ve started! It’s really annoying me to have so many unfinished or in-progress series, especially when I only have one or two books left to read!

Completed series
  1. Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  2. Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda
  3. Deltora Quest 2: Shadowlands by Emily Rodda
  4. Deltora Quest 3: Dragons of Deltora by Emily Rodda
  5. Burying Water series by K.A. Tucker
  6. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han
  7. The Taking trilogy by Melissa West
  8. The Darkest Minds trilogy by Alexandra Bracken
  9. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
  10. A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy by Sarah J. Maas

Series in progress
  1. Geek Girl by Holly Smale - 4/9 books read
This series is going to take a little more work to finish since I still have 4 books and 1 novella left to read.
  2. Dark Heart trilogy by Lee Monroe - 2/3 books read
I’ve only just finished the second book in this series and enjoyed it. But I found that there was a lot that I had forgotten from the first book so I definitely need to read the third and final book to complete this trilogy before I forget everything from the second book!
  3. Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis - 1/3 books read
I’ve only read the first book in this series and enjoyed it. But what’s preventing me from moving onto the second book is that I keep picking up other books instead because there are just too many other books that I also want to be reading.
  4. The Search for Wondla trilogy by Tony DiTerlizzi - 1/3 books read
See explanation for the Across the Universe trilogy.
  5. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - 5/8 books read
This series annoys me greatly because I started it way back in January 2016 and couldn’t manage to finish it. It’s been nine months since I even picked up a book in this series so it’s definitely time to try and finish the last few books.
  6. Bakuman manga series by Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata - 12/20 volumes read
  7. Fullmetal Alchemist manga series by Hiromu Arakawa - 6/9 omnibus volumes read
  8. The Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni - 2/? Books read
I’m not even sure that I should be including this series because it’s now an ongoing series. I recently found out that there’s going to be at least a fourth book and that annoys me greatly because the expected publication date isn’t until February 2018. That’s plenty of time for me to forget everything that happened in the previous books and I will not re-read them just so I can read the newest book because I have too many other unread books to be doing that.

Restricting re-reads → on track
I have only re-read five books so far this year and that’s okay with me since two of those were finishing off the Harry Potter re-read that I began in 2016. I reread 24 books in 2016 so this is a significant reduction from that number.
However, I only just started a re-read of Clockwork Angel, and knowing me, I’ll definitely want to continue on and complete a re-read of the entire trilogy after that.
I also can’t decide whether or not I want to re-read the Harry Potter series yet again, despite having only just read the final two books earlier this year. I’m just really in the mood to read the earlier books again but I also have a crazy amount of unread books I need to get to.

Read more manga → completed
This goal was deliberately left vague and I didn’t set any specific criteria I’m considering this goal completed. I had a list of manga series that I most wanted to read at the start of the year but circumstances and reading priorities have changed since then. I now only want to finish both of the manga series I’m currently reading and I’ll be super happy with that since Bakuman and Fullmetal Alchemist were the top two on my list that I wanted to read.

Overall I’m super happy with my reading and where I’m at with my reading goals at this stage of the year. I’m so excited that July has been the most successful month so far for reading my TBR books and not adding more! The one thing that I feel that I need to work on for the rest of the year is to finish all the series that I’m currently reading and not to keep starting new series!

August 2017 TBR

Jen
In some very exciting news, I’ll be starting my new job soon! Therefore I have no idea how much time I’ll actually have to devote to reading. I am participating in the TomeTopple readathon this month (Mel and I have a separate TBR for that) but other than that I don’t really know what I feel like reading. So I’m just going to try and continue on with the books that I’m currently reading and series that I need to continue.

Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare
A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOTAR #3) by Sarah J. Maas
Voyager (Outlander #3) by Diana Gabaldon
A Hero for Wondla (The Search for Wondla #2) by Tony DiTerlizzi
A Million Suns (Across the Universe #2) by Beth Revis
Dark Heart Rising (Dark Heart #2) by Lee Monroe
Draekora (The Medoran Chronicles #3) by Lynette Noni
Picture Perfect (Geek Girl #3) by Holly Smale
Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

Mel
Some of these books are for the TomeTopple readathon, which I may not actually finish during the readathon. I have added a few more for a bit more variety and to clear out some old books that I was given a few months ago. A few of them are really short, so they should take barely any time to read, assuming I find them interesting!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling
A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin
This Savage Song by VE Schwab
The Two Towers Part 1: The Treason of Isengard by JRR Tolkien
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Dragonsbane by Patricia C Wrede
Quest by David Skipper
The Ghosts of Ravens Crag by Hugh Scott

TomeTopple Readathon Round 4 TBR

Jen

So it’s time for another round of TomeTopple! This is a fantastic readathon created by Sam from ThoughtsonTomes and is all about reading big books! Specifically books over 500 pages.
I hadn’t planned on participating in any readathons at all this year, but TomeTopple is probably my favourite readathon and I love joining in! This is a pretty relaxed readathon and you can choose to attempt any number of the challenges or none at all. But I’m pretty excited that the timing of this round and the challenges this time fit in well with what I’m currently reading and what I’m in the mood to pick up during the readathon.

My TBR
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare (currently reading)
A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOTAR #3) by Sarah J. Maas (currently reading)
Voyager (Outlander #3) by Diana Gabaldon
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Fullmetal Alchemist (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 7 by Hiromu Arakawa

Challenges:
1. Read more than 1 tome
I don’t know if I’ll actually achieve this, but I’m not going to put pressure on myself. I’ll be pretty happy with whatever I end up reading.

2. Read a graphic novel (still over 500 pages!)
I have two options for this since I’m not sure what I’ll be in the mood for at the time. The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Fullmetal Alchemist.

3. Read a tome that is part of a series
- Lady Midnight
- A Court of Wings and Ruin
- Voyager

4. Buddy read a tome
I don’t think I’ll bother with this challenge. I just want to read what I feel like and at my own pace.

5. Read an adult novel
- Voyager

Mel

1. Read more than 1 tome
I'm hoping to finish at least one book, but one of these books is enormous!

2. Read a graphic novel (still over 500 pages!)
The only book that fits into this category that I haven't already read yet is The Marvels by Brian Selznick, and I'm not sure I want to add it to this readathon. Maybe if I have time, I'll make a start.

3. Read a tome that is part of a series
- A Game of Thrones
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

4. Buddy read a tome
I'm sure someone out there is reading at least one of the same books. Heyyy buddyyyyy!

5. Read an adult novel
- A Game of Thrones

July 2017 Wrap Up

Jen
I had such a fantastic reading month in July! I finished up so many books and cleared out my currently reading shelf as well as managing to complete two series!! There were also a few books that I hadn’t planned on reading at all, but for a while, all I was in the mood for was to read books and then watch their adaptations!
I did fall off the rails in the last week of July and neglected my reading in favour of catching up on months of unwatched TV. But I’m still so happy with what I read. However I think that the bigger accomplishment was the fact that I added only one new book to my physical TBR pile while reading 10 of my unread books! That means I decreased my TBR pile by 9 books, and that hasn’t happened once in the past three years! Feeling so proud of myself!

Dark Heart Forever by Lee Monroe → 3.5/5
Across the Universe by Beth Revis → 4.75/5
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever by Marie Kondo → 5/5

I kept picking up books, reading a little bit, then moving onto something else. I just couldn't stick to the one book! I did manage to finish one at least.
