Review: The Martian by Andy Weir

The Martian
Publication: February 11th 2014 by Crown (first published in 2011)

Source: Purchased

Goodreads description: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—& even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—& a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I loved this book. After reading the synopsis I was immediately intrigued as I love survival stories and the science fiction aspect with the setting being on Mars made the book sound even better. Prior to starting this book I was worried that it wouldn’t live up to all the hype it had been receiving, particularly with the upcoming movie release. I had also never read an adult science fiction book before, but this book definitely did not disappoint.

The writing was fantastic and the suspenseful plot had me completely hooked. The humour also surprised me as I hadn’t been expecting a funny book at all, but it was hilarious and I enjoyed the book even more because of that. The science in this book was thoroughly researched by the author and that just added to how realistic it felt while reading.

Mark Watney was such a fantastic character. His witty and sarcastic personality definitely appealed to my sense of humour and he was so smart and resourceful. Despite his seemingly hopeless situation, he never gave up hope and his sheer determination to live was just something to admire.

This turned out to be more of an emotional rollercoaster than I had anticipated. I had gotten so attached to Mark and just wanted him to be okay, so I was elated at his achievements and was frustrated and upset at each setback that he encountered.

I will say that the one thing that I didn’t like was the very abrupt ending. I don’t particularly like sudden endings and while I didn’t want the book to be over, I would have liked an epilogue at the very least.

This book focuses very heavily on the science aspect of the story and it is full of scientific terms, explanations and calculations. I have read reviews where people found the sheer amount of science too much and a little off putting. I did not have that problem at all. In fact, it was right up my alley since I was a science nerd at school and I still am today. There were a few instances where the sheer amount of information given was a lot to take in and understand, but it would always be followed up by a brief summary and explanation.

Overall this book was such an excellent and entertaining read. I gave it a 5/5 rating and I recommend it to those who like suspenseful survival stories or those who don’t mind a lot of science in their science fiction.

My quick thoughts on the movie:
I loved it! As I was reading the book I was actually visualising in my mind how some scenes and events would be portrayed in the movie and was hoping that I wouldn’t be disappointed. But I didn’t need to worry because the movie definitely met my expectations and it was probably one of the best book to movie adaptations that I’ve seen. Of course there were parts left out and there were definitely some changes from the book (one part towards the end in particular annoyed me) but overall it was a fantastic movie. I thought that they did a great job with the casting and I loved seeing the characters and the story come to life.

Monthly Recommendations: Trilogies

Monthly Recommendations is a Goodreads group created by Trina (Between Chapters) and Kayla Rayne. The theme for the month of November is trilogies!

I was so excited when I saw that the topic was trilogies and I thought it would be easy to come up with a list of recommendations! Only to come to the realisation that I didn’t have as many as I thought I did to recommend. Quite a few are longer series rather than trilogies, and I also have numerous unread trilogies sitting on my bookshelf that I just have not gotten to yet! Nevertheless, here are my favourite trilogies! - Jen

I also have a problem with having more longer series than trilogies, but I apparently have an issue with not finishing series, so there’s a few trilogies I can’t recommend because I don’t know how they end! Anyway, here’s some that I have finished and enjoyed! - Mel

Dystopian
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2)Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)
This series will always be special to me as it was the very first dystopian series I ever read and was what got me hooked onto this genre.
This is definitely one of my favourite dystopian series! (It may also have been the first one I read). I love the characters, the world, the plot, everything! There was quite a bit with Mockingjay that annoyed me a little, but I could still read the series over and over, which is why I recommend it.

Legend by Marie Lu
Legend (Legend, #1)Prodigy (Legend, #2)Champion (Legend, #3)
This is another fast-paced and action packed dystopian series. I read the entire trilogy in a matter of days because I just could not put the books down.

The Testing trilogy by Joelle Charbonneau
The Testing (The Testing, #1)Independent Study (The Testing, #2)Graduation Day (The Testing, #3)
This series has been criticised for being too similar to The Hunger Games, and while I can see the comparisons, I still thought that this was an excellent series and I really enjoyed it. For those who are interested, I have included a link to my review of The Testing

Fantasy
The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2)Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3)
This is probably one of my all time favourite series. I loved the characters, the historical setting and the storyline was fantastic.
This series takes third place in my list of favourite series ever, only after Harry Potter and Throne of Glass. I love it so much that I named my cat after one of the characters!

The Precious Stone (Ruby Red) trilogy by Kerstin Gier
Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1)Sapphire Blue (The Ruby Red Trilogy, #2)Emerald Green (Precious Stone Trilogy, #3)
This is a fantastic time travel series that is a mix of modern and historical settings, has an intriguing storyline and great characters.

Starcrossed trilogy by Josephine Angelini
Starcrossed (Starcrossed, #1)Dreamless (Starcrossed, #2)Goddess (Starcrossed, #3)
This is a great fantasy series about demigods with a modern spin on the Helen of Troy myth. I love the characters, the world and the overall storyline is excellent.

Dark Heart Forever trilogy by Lee Monroe
Dark Heart Forver.jpgDark Heart Rising.jpgDark Heart Surrender.jpg
This series has vampires, werewolves, faeries and a bunch of other fantasy creatures and was such a breeze to read. What’s not to love about that?

Contemporary
The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1)It's Not Summer Without You (Summer, #2)We'll Always Have Summer (Summer, #3)
This was such a great YA contemporary romance series. The characters could get a little annoying at times, but I sped through the entire trilogy in 24 hours because I could not put the books down. If you’re looking for a quick summertime read then I highly recommend this series.

November 2015 TBR

Jen
This is probably an over ambitious TBR, but I just have so many books that I really want to read at the moment!

Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey by Bob McCabe - I started this mammoth book in October and got a fair way through so I’ll be aiming to finish this one in November.
Never Too Far, Forever Too Far & Rush Too Far by Abbi Glines - I picked up Fallen Too Far one day because I needed something fast paced and easy to read. I was completely hooked so I want to continue on with the series and read books 2 and 3 plus the companion novel told from the male POV. (At the time of posting I have already finished these three books and loved them!)
Devoted by Hilary Duff - I finished Elixir in October so I want to continue on and read the second book in the series.
The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - I read the first two books in this trilogy in October and had planned to finish this third book as well but I just didn’t get to it so I will reading it in November.
Five Ways to Fall by K.A. Tucker - This is the fourth and final book in the Ten Tiny Breaths series. I loved the first book, hated the second one and loved the third one which got me excited to read this book.
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell - This is the November book pick for the Perustopia Book Club and Readalongs With April groups on Goodreads. There has been so much hype surrounding this book and I'm hoping that it doesn't disappoint.
Between the Lines & Off the Page by Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer - It has been one of my goals this year to read all of my unread Jodi Picoult books and these are the last two on the list. I wanted to read both of these books in October but that didn’t happen so hopefully I can get to at least one of these this month and it will feel like such an accomplishment if I manage to finish them both!
The Hunger Games, Catching Fire & Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - This will be another annual re-read of the entire trilogy for me in preparation of the movie release of Mockingjay Part 2 later in November.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R.R. Martin - This book was only recently released and I want to read it while I’m still on my Game of Thrones kick.
Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined by Stephenie Meyer - This was such a surprise when it hit the bookshelves and while I haven’t heard overly positive things from those who have read it, I do still want to read it for myself and see what I think.

I am also in the mood to read some darker YA contemporary books so any of the following are options for me to choose from:
Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers
All The Rage by Courtney Summers
Asking For It by Louise O’Neill
What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton
Live Through This by Mindi Scott
Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Mel
I got so little read in October due to assignments, so I really want to make up for it this month! In addition to the following books, I'll be reading my friends' manuscript!

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas - I want to finish this very soon, because I get to meet Sarah on the 24th of this month! I received an email from Dymocks saying that they'd organised a second event in Melbourne and OMG, only the first 300 people on the waiting list were sent the email! I accepted and got confirmation, so YAY!
The Next Together by Lauren James - this came in the October YA Chronicles subscription box and has gone straight onto my TBR because it sounds amazing!
The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J Maas - another book to finish before Nov 24th!
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas - same reason!
Doctor Who: After Life by Al Ewing & Rob WIlliams (writers)
Doctor Who: Revolutions of Terror by Nick Abadzis (writer) - these Doctor Who books are comic book style graphic novels and are just a quick read to help me reach my reading challenge goal.
The Iron King by Julie Kagawa - I've already started reading it, so I might as well continue.

Optional:
Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier
Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch
The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E Pearson
Parcy Jackson and the Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan

October 2015 Wrap Up

Jen

This seemed to be a very Game of Thrones obsessed month for me as I finally managed to get caught up on all the books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series! I also watched all five seasons of the Game of Thrones TV show and read a whole bunch of the companion books! I also managed to read a few other books that I had been really wanting to read for a while now so October was a pretty good reading month for me.

Mel

This month I've been crazy busy! I've been working on 3 essays at once, so I got very little read! While I did read a bit more of Queen of Shadows and was itching to start a few books from my Sep/Oct haul, I had to resist and I only finished one book.

This Book Loves You by Pewdiepie 4/5
I feel like I should talk a little about this book. Pewdiepie is a YouTube personality who is known well amongst the gaming community. This book is filled with random, demotivational style quotes and I loved the sarcasm! It's definitely not a book for everyone, but I enjoyed it and every page is a work of art.

The YA Chronicles October Unboxing

The YA Chronicles is a new Australian young adult book subscription box created so that Aussies don't have to spend a phenomenal amount on shipping from the USA for boxes such as OwlCrate.

If you have ordered this box but haven't recieved it yet, please don't read ahead unless you want to be spoiled!

The YA Chronicles box

October's theme was "Time and time again". I had a good feeling about it and I've been wanting to get a subscription box for a while now, so I decided, why not?

October's bookmark

The first time related goodie I see after opening the box was this...

Time Turner

Do you know how long I've been wanting to get one of these?! Harry Potter is one of favourite things ever, so getting a time turner makes me very happy! This totally made my day!

The next thing I found were these:

Timeless Hearts

Timeless Hearts are scented melts for tea light warmers. The scents are creme caramel, gourmet vanilla, strawberry shortcake and champagne and strawberries. They smell amazing! Good thing I have a warmer! I may just have to get more of these.

Moving on, I found this and just about died...

River Song's Journal

If there's one thing I love as much as reading and Harry Potter, it's Doctor Who! I've had my eye on this notebook for a while now. This will come in very handy for jotting down notes and book ideas!

I also purchased the YA Chronicles bookmark.

YA Chronicles bookmark

I can aways use more bookmarks! The more the merrier.

And finally, the book...

The Next Together by Lauren James

The Next Together by Lauren James is about Matt and Kate, who are destined to be born again and again, fall hopelessly in love, only to be tragically separated every time.

This book sounds so intriguing! I love these kinds of stories that involve past lives and reincarnation and this sounds like it'll be a real treat. All throughout the book are letters, emails, memos, documents, news reports, internet articles and diary entries, along with standard prose. This is going straight onto my November TBR.

Inside the book was a stamp:

I approve too!

Also in the box came a letter from the author and a card describing all of the items.

Overall, I am so happy with this box! I've already ordered November's box, which is themed What nightmares are made of

If you would like to order November's box, head on over to The YA Chronicles website. Get in quick though, boxes are limited!

Apologies for the quality of the photos! I used my phone instead of my camera because I was so excited to open the box, getting my camera out was the last thing on my mind and processing the photos would have taken too long anyway!
