Jen's 2018 Reading Goals

2017 was the year in which I decided that I would read what I wanted, when I wanted, and it worked out so well for me! For once I didn’t feel the pressure of having to read a certain book at a certain time and I felt more free to enjoy my reading. Since it was such a success for me last year, I’ve decided that I’m going to take the same approach to reading in 2018 and basically keep the same goals. The main objective will obviously still be to read as much as possible while working on decreasing my physical TBR pile and all without putting any extra pressure on myself.

Goodreads Reading Challenge: 100 books
I managed to surpass this goal in 2017 and will be aiming to do the same in 2018.

Decrease my TBR pile
Every year I set this as a goal and every year I fail by adding to my TBR pile rather than decreasing it. But the number of unread books I now own has reached epicly ridiculous proportions and has actually been stressing me out. According to my calculations, I started 2017 with 373 physical TBR books and ended the year with 356 physical TBR books. Still a ridiculous amount but it’s the first year in which I did actually manage to decrease my TBR books so it’s proof that it can be done!
For 2018 it will still be an absolute top priority to read from my physical TBR pile and I am going to try harder to minimise my book buying even more. I know that it’s just not going to be possible for me to stop buying books altogether, but I can only try.
Again, to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on myself, I won’t be aiming for a specific number (although to decrease my TBR by a bigger amount than last year would be great).

Read/complete 10 series
This was also a goal that I set and achieved for the previous three years so I want to keep it going in 2018. In 2017, rather than setting a specific list of series to read, I just went with what I felt like reading and that was a far better strategy. It allowed me to read what I was in the mood for and I’ll definitely be doing the same thing in 2018.

Restricting re-reads
This was a great goal for me in 2017 so I’ll be continuing it in 2018. Keeping it to a minimum is the goal here because I know that limiting myself to zero re-reads just isn’t going to happen. I already have a few books in mind that I would love to re-read.

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
It’s been quite a long time since I’ve read the first few books in this series and I just miss the world and the characters and being caught up in the magic. It’s time for another re-read.

The Martian by Andy Weir
This is one of my all-time favourite books ever and although I’ve re-read it multiple times already, I just know that I will feel the urge to read it again sometime in 2018.

Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
This was a re-read that never happened in 2017 and so I still haven’t read Tower of Dawn yet! But the supposed final book is due for release in 2018 so I would love to complete a re-read (because I have a hopeless memory and I’ve forgotten almost everything that’s happened) of the first five books plus the prequel novellas and then move onto Tower of Dawn. All in time so that I can be fully prepared and raring to go when the seventh and final book is released.

January 2018 TBR

Jen
2018 is finally here and the beginning of a new reading year is when I am most excited and just want to dive in and read everything! As such I’m already starting the year off with a slightly ridiculous TBR because I just can’t seem to narrow it down!

Books that I wanted to read in 2017 and didn’t get to:
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Artemis by Andy Weir
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
Without Merit by Colleen Hoover
If There’s No Tomorrow by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Books that I’d love to read in 2018:
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between by Jennifer E. Smith
On The Fence by Kasie West
Open Road Summer by Emery Lord
Something in Between by Melissa de la Cruz
Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

Series that I want to start in 2018:
Scott Pilgrim series by Bryan Lee O’Malley
The Giver quartet by Lois Lowry
The Selection series by Kiera Cass
The Young Elites trilogy by Marie Lu
Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Sweet series by Wendy Higgins
Graceling Realm trilogy by Kristin Cashore
Luxe series by Anna Godbersen
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (Because what better way is there to start off the year than with another re-read?)

Mel

I'm taking a more relaxed approach to 2018 to focus more on my studies and writing, which were seriously neglected last year. I've set my Goodreads Challenge to 52 books. I see this as a book a week (or 4-5 in a month), which should be much more manageable than the 80 book goal I set last year. If I can get a good start on this, I should be able to stay ahead of the game for a majority of the year.

Everless by Sara Holland
Fruits Basket Collector's Edition Volume 2 by Natsuki Takaya
Head Over Heels by Holly Smale
Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Mel's October, November & December 2017 Book Haul

I haven't done too much book buying over the last three months (compared to usual). That's probably a good thing, considering I'm desperately searching for shelf space! Lol.

October

The Testing and Independent Study by Joelle Charbonneau - The store didn't have Graduation Day... *cries* Lol
Nemesis by Brendan Reichs
One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake
Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff (x2 - one for Jen, which is living at my house until she's back from Hong Kong)
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
A Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition by George RR Martin - Got this dirt cheap! It was just over AUD$18, down from AUD$40 or $50.
Fire Study by Maria V Snyder - found this in an op shop for $1! It was actually a surprise because it is in reasonably good condition and it's also the US cover!

November

13 Reason's Why by Jay Asher - found in op shop for $1
Delirium by Lauren Oliver - found in op shop for $1
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke - found in op shop for $1
Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton - found hardcover edition in op shop for $1

Yup, I spent $4 in November!

December

The Eye of Minds by James Dashner - found in op shop for $1
Lonely Planet China guide - found in op shop for $1
Ensnared by AG Howard - This was a Christmas gift from Jen, and it completes the series.
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb - This is a series I keep seeing, and have seen for many years now, but I just have never gotten around to looking into the series. I found it in Big W and decided that I would give it a go.
Artemis by Andy Weir - I loved The Martian so much that Andy is an auto-buy, so this was definitely going to end up on my shelf!
Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner - I've heard so many great things about this book! I can't wait to start it!
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie - I've read one other story by Agatha Christie and loved it, and with the new film adaptation for this book, I decided to give it a go.
Everless by Sara Holland - I won an ARC copy of this book from the lovely people over at Hachette, through their Twitter account Date A Book.
By The River by Steven Herrick - Mum had two copies of this book on her shelf and was going to take it to our local coffee shop/book lounge, but I decided I'd read it before she had the chance. I liked it so much that I kept it!
Warcross by Marie Lu - Hardcover edition. Jen bought me this as an early birthday present.

Jen's 2017 Year in Reading

Goodreads Reading Challenge: 125 booksCOMPLETED
This goal was originally set to 100 books but I surpassed that so I increased it to 125 books and I’m happy to say that I beat that as well! According to GR, I ended 2017 having read 148 books! Of those, 139 were new to me and 9 were re-reads.

Decrease my TBR pileCOMPLETED!!!!!
It makes me so excited to see the word completed next to this goal because I aim to do this every year and I always fail rather spectacularly as I end up adding to my TBR pile rather than decreasing it. But this was the first year that I actually managed to achieve this goal and it just makes me so happy! According to my calculations, I started 2017 with 373 physical TBR books and I only added 48 new TBR books during the year. I’m actually quite pleased about that because I’ve never managed to keep the number that low before. What’s even better is that I managed to read 65 of my unread books in 2017! Which means I actually decreased my TBR pile by 17 and I’ll be going into 2018 with 356 physical TBR books. Still a ridiculous and stressful amount but it’s the first year that I actually managed to lower the number of TBR books so I’m counting this as a major win!

Read/complete 10 series COMPLETED
Series completed in 2017 (16)
  1. Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  2. Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda
  3. Deltora Quest 2: Shadowlands by Emily Rodda
  4. Deltora Quest 3: Dragons of Deltora by Emily Rodda
  5. Burying Water series by K.A. Tucker
  6. The Taking trilogy by Melissa West
  7. The Darkest Minds trilogy by Alexandra Bracken
  8. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
  9. A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy by Sarah J. Maas
  10. Dark Heart trilogy by Lee Monroe
  11. Across the Universe trilogy by Beth Revis
  12. The Search for Wondla trilogy by Tony DiTerlizzi
  13. The Dragon King Chronicles by Ellen Oh
  14. Just One Day series by Gayle Forman
The next two series are ones where I only needed to read the final book to complete the trilogy:
  1. Girl Online series by Zoe Sugg
  2. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han
These series are ones that aren’t actually complete yet but I did get caught up with all the books that have been released so far:
  1. The Medoran Chronicles by Lynette Noni
  2. The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare
Restricting re-readsCOMPLETED
I re-read 24 books in 2016 and only 9 in 2017! That’s quite a difference and feels like such a major accomplishment for me!

Read more mangaCOMPLETED
I’m pretty satisfied with what I achieved with this goal, taking into account the fact that I moved to Hong Kong early in 2017 and English editions of manga are quite difficult to come by. I managed to complete two entire manga series and they were both pretty high up on my priority list!
  1. Bakuman Volumes 1 - 20 by Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata
  2. Fullmetal Alchemist Volumes 1 - 9 (3 in 1 editions) by Hiromu Arakawa
Overall I’m pretty happy with how my reading went in 2017 and I’m even more satisfied to have completed all the reading goals that I set for myself. Especially the goal to decrease my TBR pile! It just makes me excited to make 2018 an even better reading year!
