Review: Becoming Rain by K.A. Tucker

Becoming Rain (Burying Water, #2)
Publication: March 3rd 2015 by Atria Books

Source: Purchased

Goodreads description: Luke Boone doesn't know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it-the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he's finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set—one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it's not exactly legal, Luke's never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain.

Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game—at only twenty-six years old, she's one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington D.C. major crime unit, and she's just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the west coast's most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she'll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle's footsteps.

As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she'll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she'll even want to.

Becoming Rain is the second book in the Burying Water companion series. I absolutely loved the first book, Burying Water and immediately after finishing that book, I picked up this one. I am generally wary of sequels in a companion series because I tend to get very attached to the characters in the first book and become very invested in their story. I usually go into the second book not expecting too much at all because I just want more from the characters that I already know and love. (There was a brief appearance from Jesse and Water from the first book though, so that made me very happy.)

However, I was pleasantly surprised with Becoming Rain. The writing was just as amazing but this one had more of a suspenseful atmosphere to it which I loved. The undercover angle was something new and it made things so interesting. The plot in this one became so complex and had me completely hooked. I stayed up till the early hours of the morning because I just couldn’t stop reading.

There were a lot of characters in this book. A few had been mentioned briefly in the first book but a lot were new ones. Most of them were shady criminals involved in the organised crime rings and particularly towards the end, I found it difficult to keep track of who was working together and who were enemies. But I loved the two main characters.
I liked Luke in the first book, but I loved him more in this one as we got to know him better. He was a genuinely good guy who got just caught up in criminal activities thanks to his uncle. There was so much character growth that happened and I really liked the person that he was by the end.
Rain was a fantastic character as well, even though I thought she wasn’t the smartest person to get so emotionally involved with her target in the first place. She was not only putting herself and other in danger, but also risking the case they had invested so much in!

Having said that, I really liked the romance. Even more than the romance in the first book. I knew that an undercover cop getting involved with her target was a bad idea. A very, very bad, terrible idea. And yet something about K.A. Tucker’s writing is just magic because I found myself wanting them together anyway! Of course things blew up when everything came out into the open, as it inevitably would. But the ending made up for it and my only problem was that I wanted more! However it was such a wonderful change to have a romance without cheating or a love triangle. It can be done people!

Overall, I loved everything about this book. I was surprised that I ended up enjoying this one more than Burying Water because I really didn’t think I would. I gave it a 5/5 rating and now I’m actually scared to read the next book in this series in case it doesn’t live up to this one. Maybe I’ll be surprised again.

Mel's Updated February 2017 TBR

In the last week or so, I have actually developed a decent TBR for February, so I'm taking the opportunity to update it now, before it's too late in the month. I am actually on a reading binge, and have planned a book a day for the coming week. Here's what I intend on reading:

Cradle and All by James Patterson
Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes
The Last Beginning and Another Together by Lauren James
The Iron Trial, The Copper Gauntlet and The Bronze Key by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black
The Jewel, The White Rose and The Black Key by Amy Ewing
Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
Valentine by Jodi McAlister
Zoo and Zoo 2 by James Patterson
Frost Blood by Elly Blake
Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I am in such a mood for reading that this list may grow, but for now, these are the books I want to read right this moment.

February 2017 TBR

Jen
My new relaxed approach of reading what I felt like, when I felt like really worked for me and I had a super reading month in January. I’ve done the same thing for my February TBR and just listed the books that I most want to read but these could change because I do still intend to let my mood dictate my reading choices.

Surviving Ice (Burying Water #4) by K.A. Tucker
I started reading this series at the very end of January and got completely hooked. I binge read the first three books in as many days but couldn’t quite finish this fourth one. It’ll probably end up being the first book I finish in February.

Just One Day (#1) by Gayle Forman
The Burying Water series has put me into such a contemporary mood and this series is one that I’ve heard a lot about and have been wanting to read for a long time so hopefully it’ll happen!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (#7) by J.K. Rowling
I was feeling kind of in a weird-ish mood part way through January but luckily reading Half-Blood Prince put me right back into my reading happy place. Good old Harry Potter comes through again! I would love to read Deathly Hallows this month and finally finish the series re-read that I started over a year ago! Then I shall embark on a marathon re-watch of all of the movies (again)!

Deltora Quest 3: Dragons of Deltora by Emily Rodda
I read the first Deltora Quest series in January and it very quickly became one of my favourite fantasy series. I then read the second series Deltora Quest: Shadowlands and loved it even more. Needless to say I can’t wait to get into the third series in this world and I’m hoping for great things!

Deity (Covenant #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
This is another series that I started in January but unfortunately I ended up hating the second book (Pure) so I needed to take a break and read something else. I do still want to finish this series however, so I’m looking to read at least the third book this month.

Never Fade (The Darkest Minds #2) by Alexandra Bracken
I read The Darkest Minds back at the beginning of January and liked it but then I just got distracted with other books. I would like to complete the trilogy but if that doesn’t happen then I want to continue on and at least read the second book in February.

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1) by V.E. Schwab
I have heard so many good things about this fantasy series and the premise sounds like something I would really enjoy. I would like to read the first book and maybe even the second one (A Gathering of Shadows) as well so I can be caught up when the third and final book (A Conjuring of Light) is released later this month.

Fullmetal Alchemist (3-in-1 Edition) Volume 1 by Hiromu Arakawa
I started reading this at the end of January and I definitely need to finish this in February because it’s due back at the library very soon!

Mel
Basically, I don't have a clue what I feel like reading this month! So for now, I'm going to try to clear up my currently reading list, which includes the following:

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan
Bleach Omnibus Volume 6 by Tite Kubo
